Gravity Trailer Analysis

Gravity is a sci-fi film. The first part of this trailer displays plain white text on a pain black background with no music in the background, this makes the audience focus on the writing as they have to read information instead of the usual of being given it straight away. Therefore this is more on the educational side as they have to use there brain while figuring out what things mean and instead of being able to seen it they are able to imagine it instead. There is no music in the background to distract them therefore the producers are trying to get them to put all of their focus on the text.

Out of nowhere there is a sudden sound and everything goes extremely dramatic in matter of seconds and contrasts majorly at the beginning of the trailer with no sound or movement. In a way this could be the producers moving the audience into the surroundings and settings so therefore they feel apart of the film. As the scene may make the audience feel like they are falling.

In the next part where we see the space suit, this indicates the genre is sci - fi alongside the setting being in space and that is where the majority of science fiction films are filmed. This gives a good view on what the film is going to be based about. In majority of science fiction films they begin with action with a lot of screams, this is mainly because they want to pull in as many watchers as they possibly can before people get bored, therefore they want all the dramatic scenes to happen at the beginning of the trailer. This is shown in this scene with a diegetic sound of a woman screaming in the background, this may make the audience wonder what is going on and then become involved in the trailer as they want answers.

There is a very iconic use of the space shuttle, this is because the majority of the people that are watching this film has a large interest in science fiction and everything that is involved for example spacesuits, setting etc and using the space shuttle and letting it fly off will draw the audience in because it is such a significant thing in sci fi films and therefore everybody would be worried and just really intrigued in what is happening.

In the next shot, we see a quick view of one of the main characters that is in the space suit. This is effective part of the trailer because we get to see a glance at her facial expression which makes us feel sorry for her as you can see the fear in her face. At the same time, the costume that she is wearing the space suit is very bury, this is effective because it clearly shows the movement and everything that is happening. This close up shot is good as it is not rushed and is not very quick, therefore we get too see her face for a long period of time and we get to see the worry. This might make the audience feel sorry for her in a way and they want to know what is going on. During this part of the trailer, it makes the audience confused as it is hard to figure out what is occurring, this is an effective way as it means that they will have to watch for a longer period time to try and figure out and find answers to their questions.

The next scene that I found was a good clip to analyse was the production company. This film was made by a very successful company. Warner Brothers, this is good because it is well known and therefore if people are already enjoying the trailer, they will know there is a high chance it is going to be a successful film because of the producers.

Further along in the trailer, we are shown many different actions shots which are broken up into sections by black spaces. This is effective because it does not mean that all 1 bit of content is constant and it makes the audience very tense on what is going to happen next and it is all so quick therefore they try and take in as much information as possible in one go as they wont find anything else out until the film is released.

The director is then presented on the screen, this is not something that happens in every trailer but it is very popular. This one is effective however because the director 'Alfonso Cuaron is known for directing amazing well produced films therefore this type of information may be interesting for the audience to find out.

A photo of a family is also shown, this may make the audience wonder how that is relevant but on the other hand this may make them think that the her family is the reason that she is going to keep fighting and try her hardest to survive and they are giving her the strength to carry on doing so.  Then slowly the music starts getting more intense and at the same time as this, the action is also increasing in intensity and this is keeping all of the viewers attention on the trailer as so many things are going on at different times they are trying to put all there focus on it.

The last shot of the trailer is a scene that the producers are keeping the viewers on the edge of their seat and really tense as they do not know what is going to happen next and the fact they have to wait until the film comes out may annoy a lot of the viewers but that is also very effective because at the same time it will mean the film would get a lot of viewers and the audience's questions will finally get answered. The last thing we see on the trailer is the date that the film is being released along with the name in capital letters. This is effective to put it at the end because it means that it will stick with the viewer and as it is the last thing they saw they may struggle to forget what it is called.
