Jaws Trailer Analysis

Jaws is a horror film however a there was a lot of arguments and rivalry for it to be a classic film because the audience did not think that it was right to be in the category of horror.

At the beginning of the trailer, the first thing that we see is a shot of the water with music in the background becoming louder and deeper and faster, this is because it is wanting to attract the audience straight away and draw there attention in and in this way they are thinking that the people watching aren't going to want to take there eyes off the screen as something may happen really quickly and they don't want to miss it. The narrator talking over the top of the scene is effective because it shows that the audience is getting to see and hear the information and they can put two and two together, this is also effective because it means that they don't have to imagine what is going on if the scene was focused on just a man talking and they actually are able to see the settings and surroundings of the area.

At 0:30 to 0:37 we are able to see a young woman swimming in the sea, this is effective because the camera is from the sharks point of view and therefore it looks like that we are in the eyes of the shark, this is good because the audience doesn't know what is about to happen and they can only imagine. Very quickly after this the music gets louder and then we hear the woman scream, this is effective because it then is clear to the audience what this film is going to be about and what type of music and shots are going to be involved throughout and this means that they can decide if they want to go and watch it or not as some people may be expecting a proper horror films involving a lot of scare jumps and blood which Jaws does have but just in a different context and therefore a lot of people wouldn't class it as a horror film.

After this, the music changes completely to an upbeat positive mood, this happens because the shot turns to the beach with all the families running around and having a good time despite what happened. Again, we hear a woman talking over the top to the man as he knew that there was a shark in the water and still let everybody in there, this is effective as it shows the audience that this could cause arguments and disagreements throughout the whole film because everybody may blame him for the accidents that happen. This all might make the audience want to watch the film more because they want to find out more information on why he didn't tell anybody about the shark or why he didn't try and do anything about it, they may have lot of questions that yet doesn't have answers.

Half way through the trailer, it starts to get a bit maniac and the camera shots are all over the place and switching from one side of the beach to the other and then into the water to show the audience what is happening, everybody then starts screaming and this is obvious that something is happening with a shark in the water as all the children are being dragged out by there parents crying and everybody is just emotional following the recent disaster that happened the night before. The camera shots are effective in this scene as it gives the audience a real insight on all the different things that are happening at once on the beach and the close up shots of parents crying and trying to get hold of family members, this may make the audience want to watch it to see why everybody is so manic over one shark. This scene also shows the man that is doing research about the shark and close up shots of the book that he is reading to try find out why and what this shark is doing so close to the shore, this is good because it shows that the whole film isn't just about a shark eating people it also has some information about what happens in real life when this happens.
