Narrative Features In The Whiplash Trailer

Right at the start of the trailer the exposition was revealed. We see that the film is based in New York, the main character has a girlfriend and that he is interested in music. We then later find out that he is in the best music school of the country. This makes us think that he is a very good musician and he is following his passion.

The development of the trailer is then revealed. There is a sudden appearance of jazz music which signifies the change between the exposition to the development.. This is when we find out that he doesn't think he is good enough to become a great musician. He then decides that he should break up with his girlfriend to focus on his music so he can become the best.

Yet again the jazz music signifies the change from development to complication. This is when we see his teacher becomes violent towards him. It is first shown when he throws a symbol at him for rushing the part of music he was playing and then in the next scene we see the teacher slap him. This makes the teacher seem mentally unstable and a not a very nice person. Another thing that hints to complication is that his father says to him 'what has the teacher done to you?' This throws a spanner in the works as you do not find out what this is until you watch the film.

Some enigmas that we have; What is the sons relationship like with his father? Will he fixed his relationship with his girlfriend? Does the teacher abuse him anymore? Will he ever get on with his teacher? Does he make it as a musician? Will we ever find out what the father was going on about when he asked about what the teacher done to him?
