Avatar Trailer Analysis

Avatar is a science fiction and fantasy film. This is because of it is based on the moon Pandora and the main character actually changes throughout into a weird and unique creature. The target audience for this film would be people that are interested in the sci fi film industry, a lot of people may have seen the film being advertised and then got there attention caught when on social media and YouTube.

At the beginning of the trailer, the first thing that we see was a man opening up his eyes, this could hint that he could be the main character or just a vital part of the film as he is the first person that we see. Straight after this the shot changes to somebody in a wheel chair and then from then on we go through many different scenes with a non diegetic narrator in the background giving out information, this is effective as it tells the audience a little bit more about what is going on and means that they wont be oblivious throughout the whole trailer. The music then starts to get upbeat and changes to a faster pace to keep up with the scene changes, this is because this is an SCI FI film so people would be expecting fast pace movements with loud noises. The dark clouds that are shown throughout the scene could represent something bad that is about to happen, this is because everybody always connects darkness and then negative moods into one setting so therefore this is what the audience may think.

The next scene we notice that they have landed on Pandora, at this point we wasn't told straight away that they had landed but we see the man come out of the craft with a oxygen mask and this is where the audience would make an automatic assumption because you cannot breathe when in Pandora's atmosphere. At this point the camera makes it way around the man in the wheelchair and shows us what's going on in the surroundings as it shows the audience that it has been set in a dangerous place as the background included helicopters, guns, soldiers. This shows the audience that they are meant to be scared of the outdoors in this place as it could be very life threatening.

The equipment that is shown throughout the trailer a lot shows that the place they are at is very dangerous and they need such big heavy machinery to help them survive. This shows that this is a very hard job to be doing and they need to know exactly what they have to do and when otherwise if something goes wrong then it could all go wrong in the end. While seeing all the equipment we also see a close up of a man at eye level, at this point we see scars running down his face, this will show the audience how tough the job is but also on the other hand will also show them how strong this man is, obviously he has been involved in a lot of fights and accidents but it also gives the audience a little bit of faith as it proves that he hasn't died yet even though how many scars he has gained over the years.

Next up, we see a wide shot of them looking at the avatar through the glass when it is floating in water. This is the first time the audience had seen one of these creatures, and this may make the audience wonder if it is Sully's first time as well as they look very happy to see it as he is smiling along with another man beside him. Another wide shot is shown when Sully is getting his head examined with all the wires connected to him along with a panning shot to show the computer screen and make the audience wonder what is going on at this point. At the point of view shot that comes up next, we see Sully's hands and arms turn blue, this suggests to the audience that he has now turned into an avatar and now has the features that all of the creatures have. It then turns back to a wide shot, which are very popular in this film. The audience can see Sully as a full avatar, he has got blue skin and pointy ears, and compared to the humans next to him that he once was he is much bigger, this means that he has grown a lot.
